No Fellowship with Darkness
Sunday, October 26, 2025
There is much controversy about Halloween. Many Christians celebrate it, believing it’s harmless fun. Even though the Bible doesn’t mention Halloween directly, Scripture does reveal God’s heart concerning evil practices.
Discussion Point #1:
What do you personally believe about Halloween? What Scriptures do you stand on? Have you ever asked God if it’s alright to celebrate it?
1 Corinthians 10:20–22 [NKJV] 20Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. 21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. 22Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
Deuteronomy 12:30–32 [NLT] 30Do not fall into the trap of following their customs and worshiping their gods. Do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations worship their gods? I want to follow their example.’ 31You must not worship the Lord your God the way the other nations worship their gods, for they perform for their gods every detestable act that the Lord hates. They even burn their sons and daughters as sacrifices to their gods. 32“So be careful to obey all the commands I give you. You must not add anything to them or subtract anything from them."
God calls His people to be set apart—to avoid practices that imitate or celebrate darkness, even when they seem harmless or popular in culture.
Halloween is not a game—it’s a spiritually dark day that Christians should avoid celebrating.
Discussion Point #2:
How do you feel around Thanksgiving and Christmas compared to Halloween, with its Jack-o’-lanterns and dark imagery at malls and stores?
Instead of tracing every origin of Halloween, let’s look briefly at the Jack-o’-lantern.
In a reel posted to social media, ex-witch turned revivalist Jenny Weaver shared why Christians should not only avoid Halloween but also understand the specific danger behind the Jack-o’-lantern:
"Here’s the dark truth about Jack-o’-lanterns,” says Weaver. “Jack-o’-lanterns originated from a festival called Samhain, and they believed on this one day that the veil would be very thin and the dead could arise from graves and come back and wreck vengeance and horror on the living."
She explains that people carved frightening faces into gourds to ward off evil spirits. Another legend tells of a blacksmith named Jack who made a pact with the devil. When he died, he was denied both heaven and hell, forced instead to roam the earth with only a carved-out pumpkin light to guide him—spreading fear wherever he went.
All of this centers on fear, and fear is not of God!
2 Timothy 1:7 [NKJV] 7For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
Psalm 34:4 [NKJV] 4I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
Psalm 118:6–7 [NKJV] 6The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? 7The Lord is for me among those who help me; therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me.
As followers of Christ, we do not need to entertain fear, darkness, or deception in any form. God’s light exposes and overcomes the works of darkness.
Discussion Point #3:
All of us have been deceived in some area of life. Many are deceived in this one. What can we, as brothers and sisters in Christ, do to help those walking in deception?
John 8:32 [NKJV] 32And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Proverbs 3:5–6 [NKJV] 5Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; 6In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.
2 Thessalonians 2:10 [NKJV] 10and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
Pray for eyes to be opened and intercede for people who are lost, especially for children who will be out trick-or-treating. Ask God to protect, reveal truth, and draw hearts toward His light. Continue to study and seek the truth for yourself, so that you can give a gentle and confident answer to those who ask.
