Provision: Even When Your Mind Is a Mess

Sunday, July 27, 2025

Discussion Point #1: Why is God’s guidance more reliable than our own thoughts or feelings?

Our minds need to be renewed—that's a biblical truth. But should we lean on our own thoughts or understanding?

Proverbs 3:5 [ESV] 5Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

It’s as if God is waving a warning flag, saying:

Hold on—don’t lean on what you know or what you think. If you trust in Me, I’ll show you the way.

Discussion Point #2: What Happens When We Rely on Ourselves Instead of God?

Mark 7:21–22 [ESV] 21For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.

When we rely on our own thought process, we set ourselves up for failure—because we were already told not to do that.

Discussion Point #3: How Do We Shift from Our Thoughts to God’s Thoughts?

Romans 12:2 [ESV] 2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

We know we need to renew our minds. But how do we do that?

2 Corinthians 10:5 [AMP] 5We are destroying sophisticated arguments and every exalted and proud thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought and purpose captive to the obedience of Christ.

We have the authority to take our thoughts captive, and since God is not a man that he would lie, we can trust that He has truly given us both the authority and the ability to do it.

Not only did God tell us to take every thought captive, He also gave us something else to focus on. We can’t keep pushing a thought aside unless we replace it with something better—and in His infinite wisdom, God even gave us clear instructions on what to think about!

Philippians 4:8 [ESV] 8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Our thoughts become our words.
Our words become our actions.
Our actions become our habits.
Our habits form our character.
And our character shapes our destiny.

So how do we reroute our destiny? We rewire our minds with the Word of God.

Dr. Caroline Leaf says,

When we distort love and truth, we wire that perversion into our brains—and create BRAIN DAMAGE.

God is love (1 John 4:8), and God is truth (John 14:6). So, when we study the truth of God and the love of God, our minds are renewed and healed. Thank You, Jesus!

Challenge for the Week: This week, take captive any thoughts that are anxious, filled with self-hatred, fear, doubt, unforgiveness, or whatever struggles you face. Say:
I take that thought captive to the obedience of Christ. And in its place I declare: I am healed. I forgive quickly. I am loved unconditionally. I am a child of the Most High God.
Be blessed!
